The Highlighter and Bronzer I Reach For

Three products, all Benefit, all repurchased more than once. Here's what each one does for me.

Bridget wearing her glam look

My rule for glow products is simple: they should read as skin, never as glitter. Everything on this page passes. A soft, lit-from-within look I can build up when I want more and keep subtle when I don't.

Every pick here is Benefit, and I've repurchased every one of them more than once. That's the most honest review I can give: I finished it and went back for another.

Benefit Cookie Powder Highlighter

"This is what I use when I want a glow that doesn't read as glitter."

What it does:

  • Gives a soft, lit-from-within look on cheekbones, brow bone and cupid's bow
  • Builds up when you want more, layers over makeup or goes on bare skin

I skipped highlighter for years because every formula I tried looked glittery in photos. This one gives a skin-like sheen instead of sparkle. A little goes far, so one compact has lasted me well over a year.

Why I like it: I get a glow in photos with no glitter and no greasy shine.

Benefit Tickle Highlighter

"The most subtle one I've tried. People just ask if I've been on vacation."

What it does:

  • Soft golden-pink glow that works on fair to medium skin
  • Cream-to-powder formula, so you can blend it with your fingers

This is my pick when I want something so subtle nobody can name it. It works as a cream on its own, or you can set it with powder to make it last longer.

Why I like it: I look like myself, just better rested.

Benefit Hoola Bronzing Powder

"The one bronzer that has never turned orange on me."

What it does:

  • Gives a sun-kissed look with no self-tanner and no sun
  • Matte and buildable, works for contouring too

A makeup artist recommended this to me years ago and I've lost count of how many times I've repurchased it. A little dusted on with a big fluffy brush warms up my whole face, which I need most in winter.

Why I like it: It's foolproof, it warms my face up and it has never looked muddy.
